Yessiree. A hateful flag flies at full mast near the state Capitol buildings in Columbia, South Carolina, only days after the killing of nine Blacks – innocents – in Charleston, SC, about a two hour drive south-east of Columbia.
Some jerk-off Mississippian apologist for that Confederate “stars and bars” pennant says to a CNN anchor-person that a Black person would not feel “uncomfortable” dining at a White home from which this symbol of racism and hate has been suspended. In answer to CNN’s Carole Costello, this guy said “yes”, that African-Americans would be alright dining at such a place.
As a Jew, I would be extremely ill-at-ease in a parallel situation with the only difference being that the flag under the microscope would be the Swastika, as opposed to the “stars and bars”.
The argument used to support the continued flying of that Confederate flag is that this flag represents “heritage”, not hate, that it is flown in honour of those who gave their lives for the cause of the South during the Civil War in the United States rather than representing slavery, for instance. What a load of crap.
It’s how Afro-Americans perceive that flag that matters. They see it as a symbol of slavery, oppression, the Klan, and hate it like poison. Why rub it in those peoples’ faces, anyway. What’s the point of that?
A Republican Congressman from South Carolina doesn’t see things that way, though. Not by a long shot. As far as he’s concerned the issue was settled a few years back when it was legislated to move the Confederate flag further away from the State Capitol building and he also believes that there isn’t any reason to re-visit the issue.
What saddens me is that I am certain that there are tons of people just like him mostly in the American South who see this situation in the same way.
An acquaintance of mine from Georgia, argues that his ancestors were poor share-croppers in nineteenth-century Georgia, who had nothing to do with slavery. This in answer about how it was that he felt alright with his biker group’s participation in a
parade in Lake City, Florida, last winter, which parade is held annually, and which commemorates the Civil War. I didn’t intend to but I ended up viewing some of this particular parade. Suffice to say that I saw exactly zero Black faces either in the parade itself, or watching it as spectators. Not one.
One more thing about the parade in commemoration of the Civil War and people who fought and died in it. I asked a young cop on duty why he thought there were zero Blacks either in the parade itself or in the audience and his answer, after a bit of a pregnant pause, was this: They’re perfectly welcome to participate if they wish to.
End of conversation. My thought was, being Jewish, how I would feel about a parade commemorating Kristallnacht, (The Night of the Broken Glass) in pre-World War II Germany? Same as an Irish Catholic participating in a ceremony commemorating the Battle of the Boyne. It just would not happen.
What’s the difference between capitalism and communism? In one system man exploits man; in the other, it’s the other way around.
A Conservative MP has just been sentenced to, I believe it is, 4 months of house arrest which is to succeed two months of actual jail time. This may hurt the PC’s at election time as this is the party which came to power in the wake of the Liberal sponsorship scandal, and which vowed to clean up government.
What a freaking joke. They’re all a bunch of crooks; party affiliation matters not. This applies to all governments in recent memory except Pierre Trudeau’s who did not see one – not one – of his ministers or MP’s forced out due to breaking conflict of interest guidelines or for other reasons like being charged and convicted of a felony.
Compare this to a Mulroney administration which although not lasting nearly as long as Pierre’s, saw at least eleven guys leave. Remember Sinclair Stevens, a senior cabinet member of Lyin’ Brian’s, forced to resign as a result of an issue with his supposed “blind trust”. See Also: PKP and Quebecor. I hope everyone realizes that Peladeau’s Corporation, Quebecor, financed the almost-finished arena in Quebec City, and would be one of the bidders on a future Quebec NHL franchise. Talking about a conflict of interest if PKP ever becomes the Premier of a PQ government!
And also to be remembered is the fact that, after a lot of “hooing and hawing”, no action will be taken to force Peladeau to put his shares of Quebecor (PKP is Quebecor’s majority shareholder) into a so-called bind trust.
A crook is a crook is a crook and certainly PKP, like Sinclair Stevens ( see above) before him, would find a way to circumvent the conflict of interest guidelines especially if the blind trust was to be administered by a family member as opposed to by a member of the legal profession or a different type of professional. In other words, imagine Julie Snyder, Peladeau’s fiancée, being appointed to administer her hubby’s blind trust. Right.
Let’s just call a spade a spade and admit that this blind trust thing is just some bull shit to pave the way for the rich to get into politics knowing that their portfolios would still, ultimately, be in their control even though they are supposed to be in a blind trust. It’s a way to recruit the wealthy into politics in the first place.
Otherwise why would these rich people, men for the most part, decide to get into the public sector in the first place, and thereby surrender the same opportunity to grow their wealth as they had previously enjoyed in the private sector, before allowing themselves to be recruited by one political party or another? Surely not for altruistic reasons.
A video showing a guy being beaten by police very recently is denounced as grainy and unreliable by the police chief concerned. So now we are being told not to trust what we actually see? What is this shit?
Senators spending tax money – yours and mine – on personal trips with his “young wife”, thousands spent on personal taxi trips in Ottawa by one Senator’s wife, Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin, Patrick Brazeau et al … these guys should do time. Thieves, entitled robbers. Convict these selfish fuckers and send them to prison but watch that they don’t tunnel out a la Shawshank Redemption like inmates Sweat and Matt who escaped from a maximum security jail, the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY, two weeks ago now. These are two convicted murderers doing life, one for shooting his boss only twenty-two times and then dismembering the body before burying it and the other, Sweat, for killing his ex-wife, both still at large after all this time with law enforcement seemingly clueless in terms of apprehending them as well as appearing ignorant on the question of where they are, not even sure at this point what country they are actually taking refuge in – Canada, America, Mexico, points even further south than that? It’s all a big question mark.
And now, there’s this twenty-one year old, barely of voting age, a youth, who shot up a Charleston church, an institution referred to within the Black Community as “Mother”, killing nine people. He announced, prior to opening fire with a .45 calibre Glock which, by the way, he apparently reloaded five times, that he was there to kill Black people because ” … they (you) have raped our women and you’re taking over the country. You have to go. I gotta do what I gotta do”. Complete and total bullshit, ignorant point of view expressed by a still-wet-behind-the-ears tiny little pissant. There are a number of other words which we can use to describe this disgusting, horrible and horrifying act with the word “evil” being front and centre. Pure, unadulterated evil.
In the aftermath of the Wednesday evening church shooting, President Obama, the beautiful American Chief Executive and moral beacon, visibly angry, had the following speechifying to do, saying things like “I have stood before you (in situations like this) far too many times.” “Eventually, as a nation, we will have to reckon with why … ” mass violence of this scale does not occur in any other “advanced” country.
In my most recent JuicyLesson before this one, I delved into this question, offering the following answer: desperation created by the unequal distribution of wealth evolves into circumstances which see desperate people taking desperate measures, committing desperate acts concomitant, as they view it at least, with the desperation they feel due to the absence of a reasonable opportunity for “success”, one way or another, and of one type or another (think ISIS, for example, an interesting phenomenon in the sense that it’s devotees don’t even realize that they are desperate). The capitalist democracy in which wealth is more unequally distributed than in any other similar nation is the United States, and thus it is understandable that gun violence occurs more often and on more massive scales there than anywhere else in the so-called First World, and that by a totally huge and long shot, it is important to add.
Peace. Out. Man.
Enjoy your Sunday.
I’m back. And for good reason, too. I guess one way to humanize and characterize the shootings, racial problems, terrorist activities and all the other shit going down in North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East – seemingly everywhere on this earth – a description to bring some realization of the horror invoked by names like Sandy Hook Elementary, Columbine, Cleveland, North Charleston, and now, Charleston, Ferguson, Ottawa, Edmonton – a woman in that church in Charleston, North Carolina, playing dead to avoid being the tenth victim of the shooter Dylann Roof, was lying in a pool of her own son’s blood. Her son was shot and murdered, according to an account indrectly provided by an eyewitness, after the son had tried to talk the shooter down after the latter had already fired off two rounds.
Before shooting this poor guy, Roof apparently had this to say: “No. You raped our women and you’re taking over the country. I have to do what I have to do. You’re going down”.
Peace is required. Now. Especially down south, that is in the Excited States, where the type of mass shootings that have occurred fourteen times since Obama took office in 2008, do not occur, in the words of the President in other “advanced countries”. Why then in the USA, commonly considered to be the world’s wealthiest nation?
That’s an easy one. It’s not a question of the total amount of wealth possessed by the States or by any other nation, no sirree. It’s a question of how equitably that wealth is distributed. With the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, it’s obvious that many poorer people become desperate, feeling that there is no way out of the cycle of poverty. “Desperate is as desperate does” applies to both individuals in any given country as well as to the nations of the Third, Fourth and Fifth Worlds. Desperation breeds individual acts of evil like Wednesday’s shooting in the Charleston church where people who had come, among other things, to pray and seek solace from the hardships they face in everyday life, were shot down, murdered in cold blood – desperation created by an unequal access to the world’s resources – human, natural and capital – creates an environment which breeds terrorist acts like what occurred in the city of New York on September 11, 2001.
I plan to re-produce two of my JuicyLessons dealing with the unequal distribution of global wealth which has led to a situation where the 85 richest people in the world are worth (real wealth) more than poorest almost 4 billion, about
half the world’s population. In other words, the richest 85 are worth more than the poorer half of the global population. Wrap your mind around that particular statistic, extracted from a recent Oxfam report on the global distribution of wealth.
Or you can look them up yourselves. Simply search: Unequal Distribution of Wealth.
Above: Featured image is of an unmodified, stock Harley Trike, 1690 cc., left side, showing dark/steel two-sided shifter peg as well as a piston (which appears as a horizontal thin rod here, slightly off-set, located a few inches north of the shifter peg.)
I took a trip to Visions Harley Davidson in Repentigny and discovered work being done on my trike. Modifications are described below.
Notice the lever which operates the front brake (the key ring is attached to the lever being discussed) – since someone with messed up hands cannot very well – if at all – operate that lever, it’s operation has been converted to the foot pedal in the following photo. [Photo #2]. That break pedal operates both brakes – front and back. The brake lever has been left on as shown here so that when and if bike is sold, it will be there for the trike’s next owner who will be more comfortable using that lever if he has ridden before. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter unless the owner of the modified trike wants to lend the bike to a friend which I really doubt. If that was my trike, not even Gaston mon vrai et plus grand ami, would ride it under normal circumstances. I don’t think so anyway.
Note also the little pad at the end of the accelerator in the middle-right section of the photo. This is to assist the rider who does not have normal use of his hands in holding the accelerator open. Cruise control, another feature of this trike, will assist on highways.
Brake pedal (right side). See above. This pedal also exists on non-modified 2011’s, but in that case, the pedal is for the back brake only while the above-mentioned lever operates the brake in front. The pedal in this photo operates both breaks. This feature enables the physically challenged biker to use his right foot rather than his disabled hand to operate both brakes, front and back, simultaneously. Nice feature. The front brake lever still works and can be used in tandem with the brake pedal.
I use a suicide shifter (shown below) rarely deploying the buttons. More photos to come : shifter suicide style, foot clutch.
Above we can see both the shifter, located just to the right of my left leg, and the black foot clutch, located just above my foot, L-shaped piece of metal.
In the final analysis, the foot clutch is not necessary and I haven’t used it since my clutch was replaced in Tampa, FL. last February.
